First Time Coming to The Woodlands, Texas – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
In an area known as Allen’s Landing, on the banks of Buffalo Bayou, Houston was founded in 1836. It was incorporated as a city in 1837. Former General Sam Houston served as president of the Republic of Texas after winning the Battle of San Jacinto 25 miles east, and is the person the city is named for. Continual increases in population were driven by oil discovery in 1901, in addition to the flourishing port and railroad indu The Woodlands were dedicated by George P. Mitchell in 1974, and overseen by The Woodlands Corporation, branch of Mitchell Energy & Development. Mitchell is an oil businessman who wanted to establish a conference center, hotels, office parks, retail malls, schools, large distribution centers, and golf courses, with houses ranging from affordable to expensive and huge. The land upon which The Woodlands sits was previously occupied by the Grogan-Cochran Lumber Mill.
The Woodlands residential and commercial sectors continue to grow and numerous companies are moving there. There are Chevron Phillips, Anadarko, Hewitt Associates, Huntsman, Lexicon Pharmaceuticals, Mærsk Sealand, Chicago Bridge & Iron, and Woodforest National Bank. The Woodlands Town Center area hosts shopping and dining facilities with a waterway that looks like the San Antonio River Walk. Along that waterway, there are water taxis known as “Waterway Cruisers”, enclosed and cooled for comfort.
