First Time Coming to La Porte, Texas – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
La Porte started by an investment group in 1892 as a speculative real estate venture. It is 22-acres of public space known as Sylvan Grove by the waterfront, and it grew in amenities like bathhouses, boating piers, and a Victorian hotel that had a dance pavilion. La Porte fast became the most popular tourist destination around the Houston area, but was seriously devastated by the 1900 hurricane. In the early 20th century La Porte steadfastly rebuilt and re-established itself as a tourist center, but later suffered not only a fire, but another hurricane in 1915.
The beach literally started to shrink around 1928 due to erosion shipping traffic wakes. The extraction of groundwater in the area also damaged the land. Sadly, erosion had then eliminated the beach totally, but restoration of Sylvan Beach Park started in 2009, and there is discussion of building a large hotel on the shoreline.
